Welcome to Witan Investment Trust

Established in 1909, Witan Investment Trust plc (“Witan”) is an investment trust listed on the London Stock Exchange, which means that you can buy and sell its shares through any UK stockbroker and online platforms that offer investment trusts.

Witan’s investment objective is to deliver long term growth in income and capital and Witan offers diversified exposure to global markets (principally equities) using an active multi-manager approach.

That means that Witan typically uses between 8 and 12 different investment managers and the portfolio is diversified by geographical region, industrial sector and at the individual stock level.  The blend of different active approaches and styles aims to deliver added value for shareholders while smoothing out the volatility normally associated with a single manager.

Please remember past performance is not a guide to future performance and the value of an investment and the income from it can fall as well as rise as a result of currency and market fluctuations and you may not get back the amount originally invested.

What is Multi-Manager?

Witan employs an active multi-manager approach, allocating funds for investment by selected managers with different styles and specialisations. The aim is to access the best available managers, including those not accessible on the same terms (if at all) to UK investors. Witan’s multi-manager approach was adopted in 2004, in the belief that no single manager was likely to excel in all markets and at all points in the economic cycle. Employing managers to invest in their areas of greatest competence has the potential to improve returns and to reduce risk relative to using a single manager. (Performance and low volatility cannot be guaranteed and past performance is not a guide for future performance. The value of an investment and the income from it can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount originally invested.)

Witan Story

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts – Aristotle

Witan was established in 1909 to manage the estate of the first Lord Faringdon, Alexander Henderson. Witan listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1924 and in 1932 it founded Henderson Administration (now Henderson Global Investors) to manage its funds.

In 1983 Henderson itself became a public Company by being floated on the London Stock Exchange and in 1997 Witan sold its last remaining stake in Henderson to AMP.

In 2004 Witan became self-managed and appointed its first Chief Executive Officer. At the same time, it adopted a multi-manager strategy and the current CEO was appointed in 2010. In 2009, Witan celebrated its Centenary in 2015 and 2020 marks 45 years dividend growth but please be aware that past performance is not a guide to future performance.
